| Proctology deals with complaints and diseases of the rectum, a part of the body which is a taboo zone for most, and about which it is uncomfortable to talk about. The patients affected find it more than awkward to seek the help of a physician about their complaints. Because of this, self treatment with cream, suppositories or other household remedies are tried, mostly without long-term success. Probably the most common ailment, apart from constipation, are haemorrhoids, where the veins of the anus swell ( become engorged or varicosed) and are pressed outwards. |
|

1st degree: Slightly swollen haemorrhoids which can only be detected using a proctoscope.
2nd degree: Upon defecation the haemorrhoids are pushed outwards, but usually retract spontaneously or can be pushed back into the anal passage manually.
3rd degree: The haemorrhoids do not only protrude upon defecation, but also when walking for long stretches or carrying heavy loads. It is not possible to push the haemorrhoids back into the anal passage manually.
4th degree: In this stage the anal passage is altered considerably. The haemorrhoids protrude constantly and cannot be pushed back even for a short period.
Haemorrhoids, however, are not always the cause of individual complaints.
There exist numerous disorders in and around the anus which must be clarified and which can be the cause for the complaints of the rectum and can be as serious as tumorous growths.
